Grant was a wonderful and devoted father to Thomas, Jeff (Debi), Mary Ann, and Susan (Jim) Schuld, and a cherished grandfather to Matthew (Amy), Austin Schuld, and Alexa Schuld. He was also a proud great-grandfather to Viviana, Gianna Rose, and George Mings. Grant earned his bachelor’s degree in education from Southern Illinois University and proudly served his country in the United States Army. His favorite poem, The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost, beautifully reflected the way he lived his life. There were always strangers around his table, people in need to help, and those less fortunate to care for. In his leadership role with the USDA, Grant consistently championed others, often promoting those who simply needed someone to believe in them and give them a chance. Grant’s favorite Bible verses were:
• Jeremiah 33:3 — “Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.”
• John 3:16 — “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
Along with his wife, Norma, Grant was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Alvis and Dora Mae; his siblings, Mary, William, Robert, Everett, Blanche, Earl, and Francis; and his beloved nephew, Earl Mings Jr., who was related on both sides of the family through the marriage of two sisters to two brothers and whom he always considered a son. Grant’s passing leaves a profound hole in the hearts of all who loved him, but we take comfort in knowing we will see him again in Heaven. Funeral will be held on Thursday, February 19, 2026, at 1:00pm at Colonial Terrace Funeral Home in Eldorado. Interment immediately following the service at Masonic Cemetery, Raleigh, Illinois.
