James “Jim” Melvin Gibbons, age 97, of Harrisburg, Illinois, passed away peacefully at the VA Community Living Center in Marion, Illinois on Monday, February 9, 2026. Jim was born in Eldorado, Illinois, and lived a life defined by service, hard work, and deep devotion to his family. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, June Gibbons; his children Cindie Mears and Roger Gibbons. He is survived by his daughter Roxie McMillan of Eldorado and leaves behind a proud legacy through his grandchildren: Jamie Dean (Rawlin) of California, Terri Mears of Michigan, Rechel (Corey) Harrison of Harrisburg, Jada Emmons (Jimmy Certain) of Equality, and Rex McMillan (Miranda Harris) of Eldorado. Jim was also blessed with twelve great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him immense joy and pride. Jim honorably served his country in the United States Navy during both World War II and the Korean War, working as a Machinist Mate. After his military service, he settled in Harrisburg, Illinois, where he built a long and respected career in auto bodywork at Maddox Garage, dedicating over 45 years to his craft. Outside of work, Jim found his greatest peace outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman who especially loved deer hunting and bass fishing tournaments, passions he enjoyed for decades. Jim will be remembered for his strong work ethic, quiet resilience, and the enduring love he had for his family. His legacy lives on through the many generations who were fortunate enough to call him husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Graveside services will be held on Thursday, February 12, 2026 at Wolf Creek Cemetery in Eldorado at 1:00 pm.
